RAJYA SABHA ELECTION FOR GOA ON JULY 21

Panaji (Goa): The elections to elect the Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament in Goa would be held on July 21.

As per the communication from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the term of office of the sole member of Rajya Sabha Shantaram Naik (Congress) is due to expire on his retirement on July 28.

As such the Commission has decided to hold a Biennial election to the council of States from Goa to fill up the vacancy on July 21.
The term of the Rajya Sabha member is of six years, while the one-third of its members retires in every two years.
ECI has directed Chief Electoral office (CEO) to hold the biennial elections to the Council of States on July 21. The counting will be held on the same day at 5pm
The notification for the election would be issued on July 4 with filing of nominations. The last date of making nominations is on July 11. The scrutiny of the nominations will be held on July 12 while the withdrawal of candidatures, if any on July 14.
The BJP led coalition government with 20 MLAs is currently in power in Goa. The opposition congress has 16 MLAs and one legislator from NCP.
