Gunwanti Paraste (Pune): In a typical Bollywood-style investigation, Pune Rural Police station yesterday arrested a gang of robbers who were robbing people on Pune-Mumbai Expressway.
Seven people were arrested after they robbed a family on the expressway, which had stopped its car to freshen up. The police officials who swung into action swiftly managed to crack down on the entire gang of seven, which was habitually robbing people on this highway.
Sandip Pakhale, additional superintend of police, Pune Rural, said that one Kamal Singh who was travelling on the expressway was robbed by this gang at around 2 a.m.
“Some 5-7 robbers came and threatened Singh with sharp weapons and took his gold chain of 10 gram and Rs 5,000. Singh then informed about the robbery to the police station at Urse Toll and he went as he had to take his daughter to the hospital.”
Police started the search as per the description is given by Singh. “We knew that all robbers went in one car but one robber had no place in the car and so he walked down to forest area.”
As the robbers were alert that police might chase them, the police pretended as if the search has been called off.
“We were patrolling from crane where we sat. Soon we saw him and we arrested him. We asked the robber to call his friends and asked their place. With his help, we arrested remaining six robbers. We later sent their photographs to Singh to confirm their identity.”
Pakhale added, “We also came know that the same gang looted one more family on the expressway last week. That family also identified this gang.”
Their records show that all of them have a criminal background. There are crimes like robbery, rape against them at Ahmednagar, Buldhana, Delhi, and Pune police stations. We have booked them under MCOCA.
According to Pune police, there has been an increase in a number of complaints of robberies on the expressway and Old Pune-Mumbai highway. According to them, an arrest of one gang will help them to understand whether there are gangs looting the passengers.
