TANKER DRIVER IN POLICE CUSTODY FOR AMMONIA GAS LEAK

Vasco (Goa): Driver of the tanker that overturned on the Chicalim-Airport road has been taken into custody, a report by state government mentions. 

 
According to the report, the tanker containing Ammonia gas overturned after the driver tried to avoid a tourost taxi on way. 
 
“The incident occurred as the driver tried to avoid some tourist taxi. The driver was taken into Vasco Police Custody,” reads about extract of the report. The name of the driver has been kept under wraps until further orders by government.
 
The tanker bearing number GA-06-T-2864 carrying 15 tonnes of with Ammonia Gas liquid weighting 35 tonnes on the route from MPT to ZACL, at Chicalim Park approximately 14 kms from MPT was reported to have overturned on its side causing massive leakage of Ammonia Gas early this morning. The people living in the surrounding were evacuated and two women were reported to be shifted to hospital after they complained of suffocation.  

The Disaster Management, South Goa District adopted immediate preventive measures by spraying water to control any untoward incident at the site, which was successfully completed in 6-7 hours of intense operation. The entire road stretch was closed during the process.  

“The Talathi of Momurgao sada reached the site immediately on being intimated of the accident by ZACL official. Fire tenders from ZACL along with tenders from Fire and Emergency Service and MPT were pressed into service to address the problem. The Dy. Collector and SDO Vasco, Mormugao, Mamlatdar and Joint Mamlatdar of Mormugao along with fire officials led by Director Ashok Menon and Superintendent Of Police Arvind Gawas; DySP Sunita Sawant and PI reached the spot instantly to oversee the handling and monitoring of the situation,”mentions the report. 

The situation was normal and there were no casualties or any untoward incident. The report also stated that only a senior citizen was taken to the Cottage Hospital Chicalim and thereafter to the SMRC hospital and is out of danger.

All the four Schools within the vicinity Regina Mundi, School, Navy Children School, Vidhya Mandir School and Pre-Primary School remained closed for precautionary reasons.
