Well, one cannot deny that till today, no one has made a film on a recent happening and that too on currently active politicians. Based on Sanjaya Baru’s book which was published in April 2014 the movie ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ is a very unique film or one can also call it a feature film cum documentary which follows ex-PM Dr. Manmohan Singh’s tenure from 2004 till 2014.
The film opens in the year 2004 when United Progressive Alliance wins the Lok Sabha polls and Congress president Sonia Gandhi (Suzanne Bernert) steps back and suggests the name of Dr. Manmohan Singh (Anupam Kher) for the Prime Minister’s position. As the movie progresses, we see Sanjaya Baru (Akshaye Khanna) who is appointed by Dr Manmohan Singh in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and who is also the only non-bureaucrat in the PMO, tries to make PM aware about the intentions of the party as well as the people working in the PMO.
Akshaye Khanna and Anupam Kher have pulled off their respective roles very impressively and Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi was also very convincing even though she did not have much screen time.
Director Vijay Ratnakar Gutte has to be appreciated for his research as well as the casting. It is indeed a bold attempt to make a film of this sort and release it at a time when we are facing Lok Sabha Polls in a short time.
However, a person who doesn’t follow national politics will find it hard to understand certain parts of the movie and recognize certain characters. But, if politics is something that interests you then The Accidental Prime Minister is a must watch for you.
