Panaji (Goa) Goa Governor Mridula Sinha today stressed upon the need for societal cum family attitude change towards girl child
In her message on the occasion of ‘International Girl Child Day’, the Governor has emphasized upon the slogan ‘Save and Educate Girl Child’.
Stating that there is need for attitude change, Governor said that parents need to ensure that girls like boys receive health care, education, training, opportunities and access to resources.
“Education is one of the strongest weapons we have against gender inequality. Women need to get higher and quality education. They should be empowered so that they can enjoy the fruits of equal opportunities,” she said.
“Today’s modern India offers a lot of opportunities to women; this is one side of progressing India. But on the other hand, if we look at gender decline in the sex ration, the dark side of Indian society comes to light,” she said.
Governor said that there are many examples of how much women can achieve when given the opportunity, like the country has women political leader, astronauts, athletes and writers, etc, who are role models for young women. “But social inequalities and discrimination still prevent many women from fulfilling their potential,” she lamented.
Sinha pointed pit that the principle of gender equality is contained in the Indian constitution, legal system and government policies; yet there is wide gap between these principles and ground reality of status of women in many communities across India. “This is shown by low female literacy rates and high maternal mortality rate, particularly in rural areas,” she stated.
Governor said there is need for efforts in order to stop the decreasing number of girl child in the country.
