Hockey: India women beat Malaysia
Donghae City (South Korea), May 17 (IANS) Defending Champions India registered their third consecutive victory at the fifth Women’s Asian Champions Trophy as they best Malaysia 3-2 in a closely-fought encounter at the Sunrise Stadium here on Thursday. India had earlier beaten Japan 4-1 and China 3-1 in their previous matches. With three convincing wins, India have qualified for the final on Sunday as table toppers with nine points.
BCCI announce squads for Women’s T20 Challenge match
MUMBAI: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 13-member squads for the Women’s T20 Challenge match to be played ahead of the IPL 2018 Qualifier 1 on May 22 at the Wankhede Stadium. The contest will pit IPL Trailblazers, captained by Smriti Mandhana, against IPL Supernovas, to be led by Harmanpreet Kaur. The one-off match will feature 26 players, including 10 international cricketers from Australia, England and New Zealand.

Sharapova rallies to defeat Cibulkova at Italian Open
Rome, May 17 (IANS) Three-time champion Maria Sharapova came back from a set down to defeat Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and advance to the third round of the Italian Open. After a three-set win over 18th-ranked Australian Ashleigh Barty in the first round, Sharapova on Wednesday needed two and a half hours to overcome the Slovak World No. 34 in a match filled with hard-fought rallies and loud grunts on virtually every shot, reports Efe.
Bengaluru FC qualify for AFC Cup knockouts
DHAKA: Benguluru FC produced a professional performance to blank Abahani Dhaka 4-0 before outside help from Aizawl FC ensured their qualification for the Inter-Zonal semifinals of the AFC Cup. Daniel Segovia (13th min), Nishu Kumar (16th, 58th) and Sunil Chhetri (60th) struck for Bengaluru, who topped Group E with a resounding win and advanced in the competition.
UEFA council criticises Infantino’s competition plans
LAUSANNE: UEFA and other football power brokers on Wednesday joined forces to say they had “serious reservations” over FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s plan to reformat the Club World Cup and create a Global Nations League. The Professional Football Strategic Council (PFSC) met in Lyon on Wednesday ahead of the Europa League final. In addition to the governing body of European football, it brought together the European Club Association (ECA), the recently renamed European Leagues (EPFL) and the players’ union (FifPro).
Atletico crush Marseille 3-0, win their third Europa League title
LYON, France, May 16 (Xinhua) — La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid proved their formidable firepower in Europa League, beating Ligue 1 side Marseille 3-0 in the final here on Wednesday. It was the third time for Atletico to win the tournament in franchise history. Atletico, who made their fifth appearance in the final of European tournaments in the past nine years, were crowned in Europa League in 2010 and 2012, while Marseille anticipated for another European title after winning the Champions League back in 1993.

Ambelim Queens clinch GSPL Women’s title
AMBELIM: Ambelim Queens defeated Chinchinim Angels 2-0 to clinch the Sevens Women’s Football Festival organised by Goa Sevens and Ambelim Sports Club played at Ambelim Sports Complex, Ambelim on Wednesday. Karishma Shirvoikar scored a brace for the winners.
Ambelim Queens came into the final as strong contenders having won all their league games with impressive wins. On the other side, Chinchinim Angels won four games having lost one to the opponents Ambelim Queens.
Shreyas, Urvi emerge victorious at Archery summer camp
PANJIM: Shreyas Parab and Urvi Shirodkar emerged winners in the boys and girls category respectively at the Zito Archery Academy’s Archery Summer Camp held at Don Bosco Oratory, Panjim, recently. Around 97 students participated in the Archery Summer Camp.
Krishna Volvoikar and Angad Sodhi were placed second and third respectively in the boys category while Asmi Kamat and Dipti Singh bagged the second and third spot respectively.
Quepem Veterans lift Saligao Veterans Cup
SALIGAO: Quepem Veterans defeated Varca Veterans 8-7 via tie-breaker to clinch Saligao Veterans Soccer Cup, organised by Saligao Sporting Club, at Saligao ground, recently.
The teams were locked in a 1-1 draw at the end of the regulation time.
