Panaji (Goa): The Parliamentary Board of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has cleared state party president Vinay Tendulkar’s name as their party candidate for the Rajya Sabha election in Goa, to be held on July 21.
Tendulkar is set to file his nomination on July 11 in absence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is currently in US and is expected to return back on July 13.
When TNV contacted, Tendulkar confirmed that his candidature is been cleared by the party’s Parliamentary Board and that he will file his nomination papers on July 11 at 11.30 am.
Tendulkar has been the state BJP president for more than five years. He had taken over the post in 2012 after BJP came to power. He had succeeded Laxmikant Parsekar who vacated the post to join the state cabinet as the health minister. He again got re-elected in 2016.
BJP and its coalition strength in the State Legislative Assembly is 20, with BJP having 12 MLAs, and three each from MGP, Goa Forward and Independents.
On the other hand the opposition are 17 in number- Congress 16 and one Nationalist Congress party (NCP).
Congress is yet to decide on its candidate for the Rajya sabha seat.
